Harley must make this life-altering decision as she discovers frightening revelations about the town she calls home. Ages 13 and up

My Review

This is an interesting story, and though its young adult and coming of age, I still think it's cool. You see, 4 kids Harley, Teaghan, Gianna and Brock each get a gift box on their 16th birthday. They have the power to make a person disappear, which means feed them to the shadows who live in the box, kinda. But using the gift still is a cost. But not using the gift box has another cost as well. People the love will come to harm if they don't use them. So this is the concept of the story, which is cool. The other cool part is the characters, they are all different but not less interesting. My only small, really small, is the jumps of time, when we go from present to past when the story is being explained in back story. I liked the back story, a lot, it was just a little... off guard... when the jumps happened. The explanations are needed, and I am thankful for them, maybe I'm just not a fan of those kind of jumps. LOL But it doesn't hinder or hurt the story, I think it helps, that's just one of my weird things LOL

Ok, so we get Harley and Teaghan's POVs, so I'll say they are our main ladies.  Harley is our bad girl. She's a rebel at heart, always in trouble, oh and she loves horror, writing them, watching them, you know, full of her own uniqueness and not afraid to tell the world. Like a Harley, she is loud, proud and beautiful in her own way. But she's got a troubled home life. Like Cinderella, her dad has forgotten about her because he remarried the wicked witch LOL Oh, and her crazy boyfriend Nash is not helping things at all. Harley might be my favorite character. Even with her short givings of life, she has a great heart.

And then there's Teaghan. Polar opposite. Loner, dorkish, geeky. She spends all her time alone, reading, being bullied at school, And she has no doubts about her shadow box, but she also forgets the consequences that come with using the box. She doesn't stay the quiet loner. She is the real opposite of Harley. And not that I didn't like her, but he short comings made her bitter, unlike Harley, who still cared about those who hurt her. I know, it's not fair. And then to see side lines of Brock and Gianna. It was so interesting to see how the author made her characters so complex.

I loved the writing that the author made this story with. I mean, this concept and story line was fantastic. And how the reader learns about the shadow boxes along with the characters was part of the allure. And to see all 4 characters struggle and change with the boxes. It was just done so cool. and the lore of the town was interesting too. It's going to be fun to see where this series goes and I look forward to book two. 4 PAWS!
