Book Description:

For some people, the untamed beauty of the bayou is a place to hide. For Louisiana wildlife agent Jena Sinclair, it’s a place of refuge—one where she can almost forget the tragedy that scarred both her skin and her soul. But when the remains of yet another fisherman turn up, Jena realizes that Bayou Pointe-aux-Chenes is not safe for her…or anyone else.

The mysterious deaths aren’t her only problem. A dangerous drug known as Black Diamond is circulating through Terrebonne Parish, turning addicts into unpredictable sociopaths. Jena’s investigation leads her to Cole Ryan—a handsome, wary recluse struggling with his own troubled history—who knows more than he’s willing to admit. If they want to stop the killer, Jena and Cole must step out of the shadows of their pasts and learn to help each other…before the evils lurking in the bayou consume them both.

Excerpt:

Cole stood
inside the door, knowing she’d be there any second. She would knock, probably
with a firm rap to remind him who had the authority here, and it wasn’t him.
She would expect to come inside, and while he could deny her entrance without a
warrant, he wouldn’t. It would raise too much suspicion.
His fists
clenched and unclenched. Again. Again. The press and release of tension
filtered out some of the stiffness from his arms and shoulders. The woman was
striking, her wistful expression had resonated with him, and he had wanted to
look at her. He’d looked long and hard enough that she’d caught him standing in
the doorway like an idiot. Otherwise, he could’ve pretended to be gone and not
answered his door. Now, hiding wasn’t an option.
The last thing
he needed in his life was a woman. Especially a woman with a badge and a gun.
Though expected,
the sharp knock made his shoulders jerk upward, and his fingers clenched again
into fists. Weapons his body provided to protect itself, to protect him, to
keep everyone away.

“Sir, I know
you’re in there. I’m Agent Sinclair of Louisiana Wildlife and Fisheries.” Her
voice was clear and no-nonsense. He tried to place her accent—she wasn’t from
Terrebonne Parish but didn’t have a typical Southern accent either. “I want to
talk to you about the gator in front of your neighbor Doris’s house. It’ll only
take a minute or two.”
Damn. Now that
he knew his neighbor’s real name, the Wicked Witch was dead. Now she was Doris.
He took a deep
breath, turned, and opened the door an inch. Maybe two inches.
A hazel eye,
heavy on the green, and the bill of a dark-green baseball cap came into view,
peering through the crack. A strand of hair that trailed over her forehead from
beneath the cap shone like pure molten fire.
“You can open it
all the way, you know. I don’t bite. I’d like to come inside for a few minutes
and talk, or you can come out on the porch. Having a conversation isn’t
optional, but where we have it is. For now.”
Damn it. Cole
had to admit he was stuck and it was his own damned fault for standing in the
doorway and watching her for so long. He opened the door wide, dread giving way
to curiosity when he finally saw her face up close. She was beautiful but
lightly scarred, more on her cheeks than her forehead, so she’d probably been
hit by flying glass rather than having her head go through a windshield. Fairly
recent too. The spots were still pink, but they were scars and not wounds. Five
or six months old, he’d say. Eventually, they’d fade and, with her fair skin,
would easily cover with makeup. If she hadn’t been so close—not to mention his
fixation on her face—he wouldn’t have noticed them even now.

“Are you going
to let me come inside, or are you coming outside, or do I need to make it an
official order?”

My Review

I absolutely adore this woman. Everything she touches is just amazing, completely captivating and always an adventure. Plus, she's writing about my neighbors here. Literally this is where I live lol. A few miles southwest and you're in my yard. And she does a phenomenal job of getting the right picture of true Louisiana. And I fell in love with Jena in Gentry's book, so now she's getting her own and it's AWESOME!!!

Jena has finally come home. Well, with scars, inside and out, her almost loser brother in tow, and some serious self doubt go follow. She's recovering and struggling but when her new partner finds a dead body, her brother doing drugs, and the FBI trying to get this new drug under control, Jena forgets about her personal drama and throws herself into the job. And then she meets Coleman Ryan. He's got his own serious issues. But they are great for each other. And when Cole finds the gator that killed the man Jena found, it kinda spins from there :)

Both characters are super well written, and not just these two. Mac Jenna's new partner, and the return of Ceelie and Gentry round off some great details too. The plot is awesome. Suspenseful with excellent little parts of romance and adventure as well as some healing of some wounds.  And the writing, oh how magnificent it is!! I always love to devour this author's books then I basically cry waiting for her next one!! Lol. So until we get more, I'll just reread them all again!! 5 SPECTACULAR PAWS!!!

wild man's curse-sandlin low resThe bones said death was comin’, and the bones never lied.

While on an early morning patrol in the swamps of Whiskey Bayou, Louisiana wildlife agent Gentry Broussard spots a man leaving the home of voodoo priestess Eva Savoie—a man who bears a startling resemblance to his brother, whom Gentry thought he had killed during a drug raid three years earlier. Shaken, the agent enters Eva’s cabin and makes a bloody discovery: the old woman has been brutally murdered.

With no jurisdiction over the case, he’s forced to leave the investigation to the local sheriff, until Eva’s beautiful heir, Celestine, receives a series of gruesome threats. As Gentry’s involvement deepens and more victims turn up, can he untangle the secrets behind Eva’s murder and protect Celestine from the same fate? Or will an old family curse finally have its way?

Wild Man's Curse Excerpt

Gentry whipped his Wildlife and Fisheries truck into the parking spot next to Celestine’s, and the fury in her face when she turned to look at him through the window took him aback. She’d been shaky when she called, frightened, and rightly so. Now she looked like a volcano on the verge of covering some poor village in molten lava. She didn’t need comforting anymore; she needed calming down.

He motioned her toward his truck. Better to go in his vehicle since they were “acquaintances” anyway, or so he’d told his counterpart at the sheriff’s office as a rationale for horning in on their investigation.

Ceelie jumped out of Eva’s beat-up Chevy and climbed in his passenger’s seat, throwing a gray plastic Walmart bag ahead of her. He picked it up and peered inside at a tactical knife still in its packaging. “Planning to cut somebody?” From the look on her face, the answer would be yes.

“You better believe it.” Water beaded on Ceelie’s black hair, and she swiped an already-wet sleeve across her face and shook her head like his dog Hoss after Gentry had insulted him with a bath. Her wet black top clung to every curve. He jerked his gaze back to the knife. “Acquaintances” didn’t notice things like curves.

The woman had no clue how sexy she was, which made her even sexier. And wet. Gentry reached behind him in the extended cab, grabbed a roll of paper towels, and handed it to her. He tried not to watch as she pulled off a few sheets and scrubbed them over her face and hair.

He failed; that was sexy too. Damn.

She snatched the Walmart bag out of his lap and stuffed the wet paper towels in it, retrieving the knife. She handed the paper-towel roll back to him. “That SOB gets close enough to me, he’s going to know how Tante Eva felt. I’m not afraid of blood.”

Celestine Savoie might be mighty and fierce, but she was too petite to take on a six-foot-plus killer, especially using a knife straight out of the Walmart display case. That wasn’t sexist; it was just fact. He’d explain that to her. Later.

“Tell me what happened before we go to the cabin,” he said. “I called the sheriff’s office and they have a deputy en route. It’s probably better for him to get there first and look around.”

She’d been tearing at the knife’s packaging and almost had it open. “Thanks for calling them. I realized after I got you on the phone that it was probably something the sheriff’s office would handle. I just . . .” She stilled her hands and looked up at him. He’d give half his next paycheck to read her expression, but he couldn’t. He could read a criminal’s body language like a pro, but women had always been a mystery. Good thing he didn’t encounter many female criminals as a wildlife enforcement agent or he’d have to find a new line of work.

“I don’t know why.” She shrugged. “Calling you felt like the right thing to do.”

He smiled and cleared his throat when their gazes stayed locked too long. Good thing her skin flushed and she looked away so she wouldn’t see him practicing his Creole tomato impression.

Yeah, they had chemistry, all right. He was out of practice but he wasn’t blind, deaf and dumb. At least not that kind of dumb.

My review
I absolutely love this author!! I normally stick to my paranormal/fantasy genre but dammit if this book isn't fantastic!! I'm totally in love with Gentry and Jena and Ceelie! It's a wonderful magical world because I live there lol! Yes it's right up the road from home and it's so authentic because Ms S lived there!
Gentry is the senior wildlife agent and he's really good at his job! He's also very serious and dedicated to it. So when he stumbles upon an old lady's murder and thinks his supposedly dead brother is the murderer, things get hectic. And when he meets Ceelie, the murder victims neice who inherits the cabin and property, they can't help the attraction that they have. Gentry is a little moody but understandable. He's hot, smart, and loyal! Ceelie just wants to sing and belives that she needed to be out of south Louisiana to make that happen. But loads of things are not what they seem.
The writing is fantastic! My favorite character is Hoss. He's hilarious! And the wonderful writing is just to die for! I can't wait to read the next book! So much suspense and mystery as well as a little voodoo magic to keep things fun! With excellent characters and growth from each, a beautiful setting- my home!- and a fantastically unique plot, it's one of her best books written!! I'm in love and many lusts as well!! 5 MAGICAL PAWS!!!!

Excerpt:

CHAPTER 1

The bones said death was comin’, and the bones never lied.

Eva Savoie leaned back in the rocking chair and pushed it into motion on the uneven wide-plank floor of the one-room cabin. Her grandpere Julien had built the place more than a century ago, pulling heavy cypress logs from the bayou and sawing them, one by one, into the thick planks she still walked across every day.

She had never known Julien Savoie, but she knew of him. The curse that had stalked her family for three generations had started with her grandfather and what he’d done all those years ago.

What he’d brought with him to Whiskey Bayou with blood on his hands.

What had driven her daddy to shoot her mama, and then himself, before either turned forty-five.

What had led Eva’s brother Antoine to drown in the bayou only a half-mile from this cabin, leaving a wife and infant son behind.

What stalked Eva now.

The bones said death was coming and, once Eva was gone, the curse should go with her. No one else knew the secrets of Julien Savoie and this cabin and that box full of sin he’d dug out of the bayou mud back in Isle de Jean Charles.

Might take a while, but sin catches up with you. Always had. Always would. And the curse had driven Eva to sin. Oh yes, she had sinned.

She’d known her reckoning would catch up with her, although it had taken a good long time. She’d turned seventy-eight yesterday, or was it eighty? She couldn’t remember for sure, and the bones said it didn’t matter now.

On the scarred wooden table before Eva sat three burning candles that filled the room with the soft, soothing glow of melting tallow. She’d made them herself, infusing them with the oil of the fragrant lilies that every spring spread a bright green carpet over the lazy, brown water of the bayou. The tools of her ritual sat on an ancient square of tanned hide passed down through generations of holy ones, of those blessed by the gods with the ability to throw the bones.

A small mound of delicate chicken bones, yellowed and fragile from age, lay inside the circle of light cast by the candles. Daylight would come in an hour or so, but Eva didn’t expect to last that long. Death was even now making his way toward her.

She leaned forward, wincing at the stab of pain in her lower back. Since the first throw of the bones had whispered her fate two days ago, she’d been cleaning. Scrubbed the floor, worn smooth by decades of bare feet. Washed the linens, folding them in neat piles in a drawer at the bottom of the old pie safe. Discarded most of the food in the little refrigerator that sat in the corner. Dragged the bag of trash down the long, overgrown drive past LeRoy’s old 1970 Chevy pickup that she still drove up to Houma for groceries and such once a month. Left the white bag at the side of the parish road for the weekly trash collection.

She’d spit on LeRoy’s truck as she passed it because she couldn’t spit on the man who bought it. He was long gone.

Now the cleaning had been finished. Whoever discovered her raggedy old body wouldn’t find a mess, not in Eva Savoie’s house.

A few minutes ago, with the old cabin as clean as she was capable of making it, she’d thrown the bones one last time. Part of her hoped they’d read different, hoped she’d be granted a few more days of grace.

But the bones still whispered death. Eva accepted it, and she sat, and she waited. At least the girl, Celestine, would inherit a cleaned-up house. The girl, Antoine’s granddaughter, knew nothing of the secrets, nothing of the curse. Eva had made sure of that….

Eva waited for her heart to fail—that seemed to be her most likely way to go. As she rocked she noted each steady beat, biding her time for the instant when the thump-thump-thumpwould falter and her breath would catch, then stop. She reckoned it would hurt a little, but what if it did? The curse had doled out worse ends to those who came before her.

She’d doled out worse herself.

The buzz of a boat’s motor sounded from outside the cabin, faint but growing louder. Wardens on patrol already, most likely.

The boat’s engine grew louder, finally coming to an abrupt stop so near, it had to be right outside her door. Silence filled the room once again, until through her bones she felt the thud of someone jumping onto the porch that wrapped around the cabin. The porch formed the platform on which the house sat, linking it to the spit of land behind it when the water was normal. When storms blew through, it provided an island on which the cabin could sit or, if need be, float.

As heavy footfalls crossed the porch, Eva struggled to her feet. Every pop and crackle of her joints knifed streaks of pain through her limbs as they protested the cleaning they’d done, followed by the sitting.

Prob’ly a game warden, checkin’ on her. Too bad he hadn’t stopped a little later, after she was gone. She didn’t like to think of her body having to bake in the hot cabin for days before anyone found her.

But the curse was what it was, and the bones said what they said.

The knock, when it came, was soft, and Eva reached the door with the help of a sturdy cane she’d carved herself. Opening the door, she squinted into the glare of a flashlight that seemed almost blinding after the soft light of the candles. She peered up at a young man with eyes that gleamed from beneath the hood of a jacket. He was not a game warden, and it was too hot for a jacket.

“Who are you?” Her voice cracked. She knew who he was. He was Death.

“The devil come to pay you a visit, Eva.” The man’s voice was smooth as silk, smooth as a lie, smooth as death itself. “And you know what the devil wants.”

She knew what he wanted, and she knew the only way to end the curse was to deny him.

She’d been granted no easy passing by the Savoie curse after all, but she would die today.

The bones never lied.
