They are the light against the darkness.
The steel against the necromancy of the Druj.
And they use demons to hunt demons….
Nazafareen lives for revenge. A girl of the isolated Four-Legs Clan, all she knows about the King’s elite Water Dogs is that they bind wicked creatures called daevas to protect the empire from the Undead. But when scouts arrive to recruit young people with the gift, she leaps at the chance to join their ranks. To hunt the monsters that killed her sister.
Scarred by grief, she’s willing to pay any price, even if it requires linking with a daeva named Darius. Human in body, he’s possessed of a terrifying power, one that Nazafareen controls. But the golden cuffs that join them have an unwanted side effect. Each experiences the other’s emotions, and human and daeva start to grow dangerously close.
As they pursue a deadly foe across the arid waste of the Great Salt Plain to the glittering capital of Persepolae, unearthing the secrets of Darius’s past along the way, Nazafareen is forced to question his slavery—and her own loyalty to the empire. But with an ancient evil stirring in the north, and a young conqueror sweeping in from the west, the fate of an entire civilization may be at stake…
My review
Holy magnificence!! I was not prepared for this amazing book. I won't lie, I didn't have huge expectations because I wasn't really sure what to expect. I haven't read anything by this author but I was curious. And man oh man, this might be one of the best books I've read in a long time. The world building and creativity of the lore that surround the characters is completely captivating. The characters are complex and well written. Full of depth and emotion. And I can't believe how fantastic this author has made me feel!! I mean I cried, I laughed, I almost lost my eye balls when the about fell out my head in shock. And then, I just couldn't help but smile at the complete turn of events and hold my breath in anticipation for there's some serious twists!
So Nazafareen- I called here Naza- she is a simple girl, who lives with her nomad family and people. And after watching her sister die, she wants revenge against the creatures who caused it. So when soldiers show up to recruit, she volunteers. She has no idea what she's really getting into. So she becomes a water dog- this is like an elite soldier who serves the king who is bonded to a daeva, which I think of as a witch or wizard, but everyone else thinks of as demons. They are related to Druj- the evil demons- but I can't go into that, the author does a tremendous job explaining each being and hiarchy and how everything works. Now Daeva's are basically slaves, they must serve their bonded part. But the hold all the magic. So, we meet Her captain and his daeva- Tommas. I seriously loved every single thing about Tommas and I absolutely cannot believe everything that happened. I know you will all love him! He's irresistible. But no there's no love triangle. She also finally gets a best friend, whom I love, and she's from a different country with different cultures and I loved her!! Then there's Darius. Sweet goodness he even made me swoon. You think they hate each other for so long, because they fight each other the whole time. Until something happens where they don't. And I'll be the first one to say I'm so cheering for them. And we of course meet Victor whom everyone assumes is a bad guy. But I really liked him too. Not everything is as it seems with him and for his sake- I want them to rescue Delilah- later, like book two!! Now we go on a rescue mission with them and there's a whole lot of eye opening that happens. And I won't be telling you anything.
I'm so impressed with this author's writing skills. I was completely sucked in and I just want more like ASAP! It's dark and gritty and seriously heart breaking, and yet there's still hope and there's love and there's happiness to be held for a few moments in between life and death situations. Hope really goes a long way. I'm going to have hope that there's a way to work it all out! And there's not a damn thing to complain about! Fast paced, completely all encompassing, suspense, mystery, intrigue, romance and self discovery- what more could you ask for. And yes I know it's a YA but seriously, don't even think about those letters. Somethings ages really doesn't define, and this one is for all ages and I think will impact so much more! I'm still awed and shocked and tearful and completely full of smiles because I just want to hope- I think hope for love and happiness for them all! Please don't make me wait too long for the next book! I'm begging you! I'm also heart broken and I need some reassurance lol! 5 absolutely spectacular paws for this one!!
