Synopsis:
He'll risk anything to be inside me. I'm his fated mate.
Lyla:
What the hell am I thinking? I can't fall for a wolf. He's a criminal and an outcast. I'm an elite. If we get caught, they'll destroy us. I'll be disgraced. He'll be tortured and killed. But his wolf instinct has locked on me. He says I'm his fated mate. And every time we're alone together, he melts my heart ... and makes me so wet I'll risk anything to feel him throb inside me.
Zac:
Everything they told me about fated mates is true. And that means I'm in a lot of trouble. I'm risking everything. As a shifter, I'm used to living on the edge. The regime wants me dead. But now it's so much more complicated. I'm obsessed with this girl. I can't get her out of my mind. I need to devour her, body and soul. I know I should resist, for her sake as much as my own, but I physically can't. My wolf lust has locked onto her. There's no way we get out of this alive, but one night inside her will be worth any punishment.

My Review
This is kinda cool, set in a dystopian world, it's a paranormal romance. It's cities are mostly abandoned and the few cities that aren't are crazy. Fort Knox has nothing on this security. We learn first about Zac and how his life came to be, then a little about Lyla, and how she is connect to Zac though she doesn't know it. We learn how the old forms of Roman type empire arranged marriages to family members are just cringe induced. LOL Yeah, I know people used to marry their cousins and such, but I just can't fathom that. But it has come down to that. And a big complaint for me is the actual romance scenes. No one stops in the middle of a fire, or a battle, to get down and dirty. Seriously. The scenes were just misplaced, and could have been thought out a little better, but as a short story, it's not meant to have long drawn out moments. But the world building was so cool. So I'm a little on the fence here.
Zac is a great character to follow, as is Lyla, in their overall moments, but sometimes, I had to really think about what they were saying, doing, feeling, because sometimes I was just a little wowed. And then something would happen to make me be like- oh how cool. LOL When Zac first sees Lyla, he doesn't know who she is, just that she's an elite and he knows he needs her in his life. Lyla is so intrigued by him as well, but some things have a time and place and she follows her mother and uncle's demands always. Some of this is also a little lacking for me. Lyla tested in the high ranges for her ability and yet Oswald was never tested, but all elites are supposed to be tested. Elites hunt the shifters. Lyla is an elite, Zac is a shifter. I would have liked a little more back story with this part too.
The action and suspense of the book was well written though. If I took out the romance scenes, or placed them differently, I would have really liked this book, and added a little more explanations, like how the scenes shifted so quickly. The conductor is chasing them, then he just isn't. The name on Zac's guitar case. The letter from Zac's father. But seriously, the action and the world building was so darn good. Yes, I can compartmentalize. LOL I do believe I would like to read book two, just to see if some things get changed, or smoothed out, because the world created here has so much goodness. I think it will be interesting :) With that said, I still love werewolves and that won't change :) 3.5 PAWS!!!
