Cold Burn of Magic by Jennifer Estep review!

Cold Burn of Magic (Black Blade #1)

Cold Burn of Magic (Black Blade #1)
by Jennifer Estep

There Be Monsters Here. . .

It's not as great as you'd think, living in a tourist town that's known as "the most magical place in America." Same boring high school, just twice as many monsters under the bridges and rival Families killing each other for power.

I try to keep out of it. I've got my mom's bloodiron sword and my slightly illegal home in the basement of the municipal library. And a couple of Talents I try to keep quiet, including very light fingers and a way with a lock pick.

But then some nasty characters bring their Family feud into my friend's pawn shop, and I have to make a call--get involved, or watch a cute guy die because I didn't. I guess I made the wrong choice, because now I'm stuck putting everything on the line for Devon Sinclair. My mom was murdered because of the Families, and it looks like I'm going to end up just like her. . .

The Black Blade young adult urban fantasy series focuses on Lila Merriweather, a 17-year-old thief who lives in Cloudburst Falls, West Virginia, a town dubbed “the most magical place in America.” Tourists come from around the world to tour all the magic-themed shops and attractions, as well as see monsters like tree trolls, copper crushers, and more in their natural habitats.
Lila has a Talent for sight, along with transference magic — in other words, magic makes her stronger. To survive, she does odd jobs for her pawnbroker friend. Lila also does her best to stay off the grid and avoid the Families — or mobs — who control much of the town. But when she saves a member of the powerful Sinclair Family during an attack, Lila finds herself caught in the middle of a brewing war between the Sinclairs and the Draconis, the most powerful Family in town.
Books in the series are Cold Burn of Magic #1 (April 28, 2015); Dark Heart of Magic #2 (Oct. 27, 2015); and Black Blade #3 (2016).

My Review
I have loved everything this lovely lady touches! Seriously, she's a freaking brilliant writer. I totally cried when her YA Mythos Series ended, but she came out with another. Well, I wasn't sure what to expect, or if it would meet my expectations, but I should have face palmed myself. I LOVED this book!!! This is a phenomenal start to a new series, with a seriously captivation world and an even better plot line. The main character is young, she's in the know about magical creatures, and she's a thief by profession, all the while living on her on and going to high school. Wow right. She's seriously bad ass. Lila is my new super hero. I wanna be her BFF!! :)

Lila's mom died in front of her. She's kept to herself and lived on her own since. She has a good friend, who owns a pawn shop who was his mom's friend. She travels around her little tourist town doing everything in her power to stay the hell away from all the magical mob families. They cause a lot of drama. And misery. And of course when she goes against her gut feeling and saves a boy from death, who happens to be the son of one of those very powerful mob families, she turns her own world up side down. Lila is hilarious with her spunky attitude. But she's also bad ass, because she will do whatever it takes to take care of herself. She has to because no one else will. And when she gets wrapped up with the mob family, she becomes a bodyguard of sorts. This is a fascinating situation :)

This is a fascinating story, with so many special magical creature, the lochness is my favorite :) I was absolutely sucked into this story and couldn't put this one down. And the characters, oh how Ms Estep does characters so well. I have become friends with Lila, and Felix and Devon, and my favorite, Oscar, the drunk Pixie. He is so damn funny with his drunk rages and seriously bad country music rants. Devon is Felix's best friend and is also the son of one of the family. He never shuts up and he's quite funny. He's good to Lila as well. And then there's Felix...the mob family Prince. I like him too, he has some secrets but warms up to Lila and I think he's going to have a cool continuation in the series. I also think he's going to be Lila's romantic interest. And then we have Mo, who was Lila's boss, and also her friend. He knew her mother, so he kept her in school and kept an eye on her. See, there's some excellent characters that I could go on and on about and I just adore them.

The writing is magnificent as always. You have to have some kind of gift to put a few words together and make it so memorable. The world that was built around these special creatures and the magic makes me want to live there, though I would need some serious self defense classes. I loved how the magic of the people were done and it was so intriguing. I am absolutely needing book two like ASAP. Especially since I am actually hoping for some romance to add to the fantastic action that was this book. :) I really loved this one!!! 5 MAGICAL PAWS!!!
