The poor living in the gutter are as valuable as the rich living in a manor.
The scoundrel is no less valuable than the saint.
Because of this, every life a reaper takes must be redeemed.
Raven has lived by this first tenet since she was trained by her father to become a reaper. But since his death, she’s been spending years redeeming the lives she’s taken. By her count, she’s even and it’s time for that life to end. If she settles down and becomes a wife, she might just feel human again. But on the way to the life she thinks she wants, the baron of New Haven asks her to complete a task which she cannot ignore… Just when Raven decides to give up on her life as an assassin, she’s pulled right back in.

My Review
This book had me glued to the pages. So, it's a little complicated to explain exactly what it is. First, it's like steampunk urban fantasy. It's very cool in this way. Second, reapers are not what you are thinking, black hoods, scythes, steal your souls kind of things. So, that alone, makes it unique and worth reading. This is a girl, who just wants to do what's right, and who wants to redeem herself of her sins so she can just be normal. But she just isn't quite normal. You see, she's a reaper, and a female at that. Raven was trained to be a reaper by her father. A reaper is a bodyguard and assassin to the former Duke, except after some mishaps back in the day, Reapers are supposed to be arrested on site. And as a reaper, you must redeem yourself by saving a life for every life you take. It keeps the balance. But, since Raven is alone, her father died, she just wants to redeem herself so she can get married, be normal, live her life.
Well that's not happening. Her love didn't wait for her to redeem herself. She rescued the Dukes son, the Baron, and his older brother needs Raven to go on another mission as a Reaper to save his younger brother. She must protect him at all costs to save him, against a lot of people who want to hurt him. Him being Darius, and at 9 years old, he isn't like most boys. And he comes to love and respect Raven, even when she does things that scares him. So, she must take Darius to find the Wood Witch, to cure him of his demons. You see, Darius has a power, but his father thinks of it as a curse. So if Darius isn't cured, his father with quietly have him assassinated. And Raven can't have that, she just saved his life. And along the way, the top guard for the mean old Duke was sent to kill Raven and rescue Darius, but he ends up helping them. Captain Jack took a little time to grow on me, but when he finally picked the right side to align with, I fell in love! Raven is a wonderful character to me. She might just be one of my new all time favorite heroines. Jack is pretty magnificent. His fellow guards are complex and entertaining. Darius is a wonder to behold because sometimes a kid should be just that, a kid. Monroe is a surprise of wonder and I loved him!
There's so many great characters. You are seeing both sides, regardless of who is right and wrong. The guards must follow their orders, but when the orders are corrupt, how do you fix it without treason. And Raven knows how bad people can be. And the world of the mechanical things, it's just so cool. Sometimes, I stay a little away, because it gets so confusing when things are described, but this author made everything so easy to understand with her mechanical world. The writing is very well done. I really do hope to see more of Raven and Jack but I look forward to Darius's story! 5 PAWS!
In simple language, Pauline Creeden creates worlds that are both familiar and strange, often pulling the veil between dimensions. She becomes the main character in each of her stories, and because she has ADD, she will get bored if she pretends to be one person for too long. Pauline is a horse trainer from Virginia, but writing is her therapy.
