Campanelli- Seige of the Nighthunter by Frederick H Cook!

Image and video hosting by TinyPic

Book Description

June, 2110. A serial killer strikes the populace of the City
of Chicago. The first victim is a wanted man by Detective Frank Campanelli’s
Sentinel Division. His body had been mutilated and, from the evidence uncovered
by forensic genius, H. Lincoln Rothgery, it has been partially consumed. The
unknown invader leaves a trail of corpses behind in short order, including that
of a homicide detective.

To add to the mystery, the DNA evidence retrieved from a
stolen vehicle indicates that the killer is former military, but special
encoding prevents the murderer from being identified. Frank’s partner, Marcus
Williams, seems to know more about what’s going on than he lets on, until the
former Navy SEAL calls in a friend from the FBI to help.

“The Nighthunter”, as the media has labeled him, instills
terror and virtually shuts down Chicago. Together, Campanelli, Williams, and
the agent must work to capture the enigmatic and frighteningly efficient
cannibal.

 Excerpt

 Lincoln
caught Frank’s gaze. “We found two different types of blood, two sets of DNA in
the car.”

“Go on,” McLain prompted.

“Herman Werner’s and the killer’s. No ID’s been
matched to his,” Rothgery stated and stood from his chair. He stepped between
the two detectives and stepped casually toward the sedan. “The killer’s DNA has
been engineered, as has the blood, but there’s no identification to be found in
the cells. He is a he and appears to be of military origin, but it goes beyond
anything I’ve ever seen.”

“So, you’re telling me that the killer is a
soldier. American?” Frank asked as he stopped next to Lincoln and stared at the
driver’s seat of the ruined car.

“I can’t even determine that without a serial
number, Frank.”

“Soldier or not, Mister Rothgery…how the hell did
he get outta that?” McLain asked from Lincoln’s other side. The big man waved
his hand over the wreckage as he spoke. “That should’ve been fatal…engineered
genes or not.”

“I agree.” Rothgery slid his glasses from his
Roman nose and rubbed his eyes with his free hand. “Gherling is still
researching the DNA and the blood while Teri is carrying out more tests.”

“You said Werner’s blood was in the car,” Frank
stated.

“Yeah,” Lincoln said then nodded. “Not much of it,
though. A lot of the DNA we found in it was from hairs in the carpets and
seats. My opinion is that he used the car for some time. Months, perhaps close
to a year.”

“So, Werner was cut out of the seatbelt…then
thrown through the air.” Kirby stepped up to the side of the car and studied
the sliced seatbelt. In the bright light, the precision cut was much more
impressive.

“Definitely,” H. Lincoln affirmed as he replaced
his eyeglasses. “And…before I forget…there are teeth marks on the body.”

“We saw those,” Frank said. He leaned back on the
workbench behind him and crossed his arms. “The bites on the shoulder.”

“I’m not talking about those, Frank.”

This took Kirby’s attention from the wreck to the
forensic genius. “What are you trying to say, Mister Rothgery?”

“I’m saying he had a little nibble on some muscle
tissue while he cut out the heart and liver. It’s also confirmed that the heart
and liver were eaten.” Lincoln met the eyes of McLain then looked to
Campanelli.

“God,” Kirby uttered and stepped away from the
sedan as if it exuded heat.

“How do you come to that, Lincoln?” Frank asked.

“Pieces of both organs were left behind in the
car. Nothing more than shreds, really. Seems he had to pick them out of his
teeth as he drove.”

Frank lifted his right hand to his chin and rested
it, keeping the left arm tucked. “You’re telling me that we have a soldier of
unknown origin turned cannibal, running around the streets of Chicago.”

“From everything we’ve gathered so far, Frank,
that’s about the size of it.”

My review

So this is a cool mystery paranormal type book. Campanelli is a detective but futuristic. And we have some serious crazy going on with super humans that were genetically altered. And it's not just crazy but scary. I loved the feel of the mystery, it's very well done. And I really liked the suspenseful way the author did it- I definitely kept my nose glued to the pages. And the cool gadgets Campanelli uses were also really interesting. AND I loved that he's blind yet capable. Think Daredevil meets inspector gadget but way cooler!!

The writing is well done and though this is my first book by this author, I'm pretty impressed. I'll have to take a look at the rest of the books following this detective. I'm a fan!! 4.5 PAWS!!

My Review

Holy awesome Antarctica is cold! Ha! I loved how the book started with a date between Blake and Nicole! We've been waiting for them since the beginning even if it gets complicated. And the crew is right off on another life threatening  adventure to save the world. There may be a lot more romance in here but it definitely didn't take away action, suspense or great story telling!!! We got gratification lol!

More powers, more adventures, more group bonding- and a masterful telling of a great story, I can't believe how awesome this series is! Everyone is maturing and risking their life to save the world, whom have no idea about all the monsters coming out! And there's always cause and effect- sometimes choices come back to bite us somewhere painful. And though the romance gives the book a light feeling, it's definitely more emotional and more suspenseful and it's getting grittier and has a few darker moments... I LOVE THIS!! AND.... For the first time- we have a cliff hanger that BLEW MY EVER LOVING MIND!!! This author didn't do cliff hangers in the first two books so I wasn't expecting it. And that... Well mini can't but man oh man does that make me SUPER PUMPED for book four!! It's gunna be EPIC! I'm awed right now so I will leave you with 5 PAWS!!!

Excerpt:
“What we’re about to do is scary. Terrifying, even. But we’ve been through things that were just as challenging. We slayed our first monster together in that cave, we escaped the Land of the Lotus Eaters when everyone there was trying to kill us, we blew up one of Scylla’s heads, we slayed the hydra, and we stole the Golden Sword of Athena from a goddess’s ice palace. No matter what challenges we face, we’ve always come out on top. Tonight won’t be any different. We’re the Elementals. We train together, we fight together, and we win together. And don’t any of you ever forget it.”

The Mermaid and the Treasure of the Bay (La Sirena #1) by A. Algeri !

YA Bound Book Tours is organizing a Blog Tour for: The Mermaid and the Treasure of the Bay  (La Sirena #1) by A. Algeri. This tour will run from June 27th to July 1st.

The Mermaid and the Treasure of the Bay
(La Sirena #1)
by A. Algeri
Release
Date: 08/20/15
246
pages

Summary from Goodreads:
"The Mermaid and the treasure of the Bay" is the first adventure of Brinn, a young woman who had recently returned to her homeland, Nyar Kaad, after years of
being away.

For her mother and sister it’s only supposed to be an episodic stay, because
their intention is to return to the capital, Adaria, held by both aristocrats,
by then, to be their home. Brinn, however, isn’t interested in living in the
golden cage of high society and aspires to a different existence, that will
push her to oppose the decisions of her family and to pursue a destiny
according to her own wishes.

The accidental discovery of what looks like a map to hidden treasure, buried in
Nyar Kaad, according to tradition, by pirates once dwelling in the settlement,
will push her to search for the hidden riches- an undertaking that the
protagonist will face courageously, at the cost of challenging her fears, the
rigid social conventions, and more literal dangers to her person, venturing on
a journey into the local legends and the past of her own family, until reaching
an unexpected epilogue.

Set to Isara, a fantasy world inspired by the period between the seventeenth
and the first decades of the nineteenth centuries, "The Mermaid and the
treasure of the Bay" is a journey full of mystery in the universe where
real and supernatural coexist intersecting in a subtle and insidious way, a
world divided between palaces and largely unexplored expanses, an opulent
capital and boundless oceans.

Excerpts from “ The Mermaid and the treasure of the Bay”, a novel by A. Algeri

The summer was ending and with it even my hopes grew progressively paler, as the white froth of the waves dissolves on the shores of the sea. Time passed, day after day, initially slower, then as each day passed the perception of it slipping away became increasingly more evident: inevitably, I found myself thinking of my childhood, when my family still hadn't moved to Adaria, the capital of the Empire.
[...]
My life was far from perfect, I had an unusual character and my nature wasn't easily adaptable to the life that ought to have been lead by someone of our status that was forced to aspire to court, but for years I had been able to carve out my happiness. Even though I wasn't particularly interested in the girls my age that talked about future boyfriends, parties and dresses, I could always close my eyes and imagine that I was in one of those far away places that I was so fascinated by and that I had read about so often in books. Despite the many remote places that I had learned about the existence of by reading, the most precious continued always to be Nyar Kaad. My thoughts inevitably went to the aquamarine ocean waves on the shores where I was born.

My Review

I found this book different. First it's really cool especially if you like history of things and pirate type treasures. But I will say I found the beginning slow for me. I'm not a history buff or into history type things, but I loved Brinn. I loved that she was willing to not conform and she was ok with being different and being exactly who she is. I felt bad that so much changes after her dad died. I also severely disliked her mother. Her sister was "just there". I felt like her sister did nothing but confirm and follow her mother. But when Brinn accidentally  cuts herself and finds a little treasure map, things get better.

The writing flows well. I know I said slow but it's just because I'm an action junky lol. It's just the topic not the style or words. So please don't let my tastes turn you away. And I love how little bits of magic get infused throughout. It's well done and its young adult so it can be for any age! Overall, it was a fun adventure! 4 PAWS!!

My review

Ok so I just adored this book. It starts with a six year old Marlena who meets a pair of wolves. She's young and full of imagination, but that soon turns to tragedy and her meeting her best friend for life- their wolf pup. She named him Romy, but he had a name already and as she grows she forgets this. Everyone grows up. And though this was a favorite and had some of the funniest and sweetest moments, there's serious heart ache in here as well.

I loved Marlena, aka Marley. She doesn't get that name until later though. She's what every parent wants their child to be, not a follower and independent. She knows she's not like the other girls- I loved when she got jealous and described said other girls. The funny thing is she's got a mind of her own and she's ok with it. This made me love her. She's also sweet and loyal and pure. And when she makes friends with Trevor and Jimmy, I loved them too, things change for her and her best friend Romy. But Romy grows too and changes as well. Yes we all know it's coming, when he gets his human side, it's all a whirlwind of awesome, crazy, scary, sad, and beautiful.

Romy is the wolf counterpart and I loved that although he had a different name for his human side- that's explained- he's still the same. When Marlena figures a lot of things out later, she realizes how to communicate with both sides. The human side is HOT! Goodness gracious is he ever but he's still kid like and filled with innocence and his learning curve is hilarious. Oh em gee the banana moment- it may be my most favorite moment of the book, next to the "reproduction" talk and him asking if something's wrong like he's dying. Goodness did I laugh. And then when it comes, I cried, and more than once in this book.

The author's writing style is beautiful and she did an absolutely stunning job of playing this one out. It's not just a werewolf book, or a coming of age group, or a learning to understand and tolerate differences book, but all three wonderfully wrapped together. It's been a while that I've had a ya book grab me emotionally like this- some of those darker grittier moments are saved for full adult books and I think sometimes it shouldn't. Adults aren't the only ones things happen to and she did an stunning job of making it work without compromising the beauty of the story. I've become a fan and I actually hope she figures out how to add to this book, a continuation, a series, a spin off, a sister story- whatever- because I'm all in!! She's a fantastic wordsmith and I'm in!! 5 WOLFY PAWS!!

About the Author:
Gabriele Russo, AKA Lucie-Gabrielle Jolicoeur-Rousseau, was born in Quebec City amidst a family of book lovers – her father had dreamed of being a writer and both of her brothers are published authors.
Since she earned her Bachelor’s in History, it was no surprise (except to her) that she ended up working in restaurants, eventually owning two, which almost drove her mad. She sold them and was nursed back to pseudo-sanity by Douglas Adams and Terry Pratchett.

That’s when she answered the family calling and decided to write. Armed with her ideas for the Gods Inc. series she went back to the University and got her Master’s in Creative Writing.
She now lives with her husband in Culpeper, Virginia, where she divides her time between painting, ripping apart and reconstructing her recently bought historical home, playing tennis and, of course, writing more books.
