Author Interview

First, tell me a little about your book and why you wanted to write this particular story….
The idea for Bite Me originated when I was missing Buffy, the Vampire Slayer, and wanted to come up with a slayer of my own.  But, of course, I didn’t want to copy Buffy, so I played the “what if?” game to make it my own.  What if the slayer was part demon? Ooh, what if she was a succubus—a lust demon? And, even better, what if she hated the actual “suck” part of being a succubus but had to work off her urges by killing vampires? And her parents kick her out of the house, so she’s out on her own at eighteen with no idea how to live on her own. To give her someone to talk to, I introduced Fang, a snarky telepathic hellhound who helps her fight the vampires and introduces her to the Demon Underground. It sounded so fun, I had to write it.

Do you recall how your interest in writing originated or did you always just know?
Like most writers, I’ve always been an avid reader. Daydreaming was always my best sport, so I tried writing when I was a kid, but the result was a horrible mish-mash of Nancy Drew and the Bobbsey Twins, so I gave up for awhile.

What inspired you to write your first book and what was it?
I was going through an awful time in my life and the only thing that got me through it was escaping into the worlds of the books I read. They helped me so much, I wanted to do it for others. I loved reading fantasy, science fiction, and romance, so my first book was a futuristic romance titled Golden Prophecies (under the name Pam McCutcheon) based on the Greek legend of Delphi, but on another planet. It, too, has a quasi-telepathic furry sidekick—a creature I created called a moncat (looks like a cross between a monkey and a cat).

Are experiences based on someone you know, or events in your own life?
Nope. Don’t know any vampires or demons. Well, Fang does look like my dog Mo, but Mo is unfortunately not telepathic.

Out of all the characters in your book, who is your favorite to write? There’s always a fan favorite to read about but sometimes it’s the side characters that are the most fun

Luckily enough, the fan favorite is my favorite, too—Fang, the smart-aleck hellhound, who keeps Val honest and has strange insight into what makes people tick. He’s a blast to write.

Is your book part of a series, and if so, how many will there be?
Yes, it’s part of the Demon Underground series. There are six books and a short story out now. I don’t know how many there will be. Right now, I’m working on four interrelated novellas so each of Fang’s hellhound puppies can choose a demon to befriend. Care to name a baby hellhound?

How do you chose when/which characters die in your books?
Whatever the plot needs. I’m a wimp, though, and hate killing characters I’ve come to like.

If you had to do it all over again, would you change anything in your book?
If I’d known it would be a series, I would have planned things better!

Is there anything you find particularly challenging in your writing?
Writing first draft. Hate it. I love to revise, though.

Who designed the cover? And do you help with them?
Debra Dixon, CEO of Bell Bridge Books and my editor, designed all the covers. For the first book, she gave me three options and we all liked this one best. She does an awesome job.

Are there any books you think some of us should read, just because?
I have some fave authors. I’m sure I’ll forget some, but Brandon Sanderson, Anne Bishop, Chloe Neill, Patricia Briggs, Kim Harrison, Carrie Vaughn, Eileen Wilks, Jim Butcher, Jennifer Estep, Kelley Armstrong, JD Robb, Patrick Rothfuss, Seanan McGuire, Victoria Laurie, and some new ones I’m binging on that I just discovered: Becca Andre, Teyla Branton, Sarah J. Moss, Linda Grimes, and Heather Blake.

We all love Supernatural, so which Winchester brother is for you?
Oh, my. I’d have to choose? Uh, Dean for short-term, Sam for long-term. Castiel . . . just because.

This or that...
A. Coffee addict?
Bleh. Never touch the stuff. Diet coke is my drink of choice.
B. What’s your favorite alcoholic beverage.
Chocolate martinis.
C. Favorite Food?
Mexican.
D. If you had to chose Coffee or Chocolate? –don’t laugh, I don’t like chocolate so it’s quite easy for me, but a LOT of people NEED both LOL
No contest. Hate coffee.
E. Beach or mountains?
Mountains to live in, beach to visit.
F. Winter or summer?
Summer.
G. vampires or werewolves?
Depends. My vampire, Austin, or werewolves in Eileen Wilks’s or Patricia Briggs’s worlds.
H. Cold or hot?
Warm.
I. Favorite color?
Red.
J. Night or day?
I’m a night person.
K. Moonlight or sunlight?
Sunlight. Yeah, I know it doesn’t match my previous answer, but those spooky vampires hang out at night.
L. Bad boy or good guy next door?
Depends on whether we’re talking one night or a lifetime.

Ok, that’s enough! LOL thanks so much for coming visit me, and thanks so much, for doing this with us! I appreciate it and I look forward to the next time!
Thank you!
