Soul Deep Excerpt – PG-rated, 529 words
“I apologize. I was totally out of line.”
Mike.
Her heartbeat went into overdrive. Melanie clutched her chest. Anger came to the rescue. She spun around. “Apology not accepted. You were plain mean and nasty. Just because you’re worth a fortune doesn’t give you the right to treat people like that.”
“I only ever apologize once, Melanie. And I never say anything I don’t mean.” Mike folded his arms and raised an eyebrow.
He knew her first name? Doc G. must’ve told him. She fought the fluttery belly quivers that always assailed her in his presence. Jutted the jaw Mama said was too square for any female. “Fine. Apology accepted. Now if you don’t mind, I have work to do.”
“Doc G.’s closing up. He says he’ll do the autopsy tomorrow. I’ll be here for it.”
Nooo. What in heck is wrong with Doc G.? Melanie gritted her teeth. Why does Mike want to see the autopsy?
“Do you want to wash up?” Mike angled his head toward the sink to the right. “I’ll drop you home. Doc got a call from Jim Balden. He thinks his mare’s dropping the foal tonight.”
So not what she needed. Or wanted. Mike Dorland driving her to the reservation and seeing the broken-down three-bedroom shack the White family occupied. Poor and proud and shunned, even by the rest of the tribe. Melanie straightened her shoulders. Tough titties. She was what she was and wasn’t nothin’ nohow going to change that.
“I’ll call a cab.” She made to move around him, and he caught her hand and drew close.
Too close.
He smelled like paradise. Like a warm sea so blue and clear and sparkling it hurt to see when you stared at the glinting waters. Like equatorial sun baking her skin and raising a hot sweat. Like a tropical breeze whipping exotic aphrodisiacs every which way and creaming her sex.
“Little idiot. I bet you intend to walk the fifteen miles. You always did act as if I stunk up your air.”
Had the floor turned liquid? No, her knees had. She grabbed the counter and tried to shake off the thick fingers circling her wrist in a steely but somehow gentle grip. “Stunk up my air?”
“Half-breed not good enough for a full-blooded Cwaatchii? For the daughter of a Ska Awhi? For the granddaughter of Ixota Migziwa?”
His nose was so close she had to blink to get his features in focus.
Her mouth opened. Nothing came out. She licked her suddenly dry lips.
“That’s it.” He picked her up and jammed her against the wall. Her face was level with his. Then he kissed her, and the world turned upside down and inside out. He tasted of all her pumpkin-coach dreams, of all her tortured teenaged visions of knights, rescue, and happy every after, of every single, furtive pleasuring of herself with his image in her head. Smoky, citrusy, and stomach-clenching delicious.
His hold on her firmed. His arm went around her waist, and when he nudged her legs apart, she surrendered. Worked her fingers into the silk of his hair and kissed him back, touching her tongue to his.
My Review
I think this one broke my heart and set me on fire at the same time. It's definitely unique as well. The Native American magic and more that they have surrounding them was very cool and the author did a great job making sure that you could understand what she meant even info wasn't sure how to pronounce the names.
So Mel is the leading lady. She works two jobs to make sure there's food on the table, a roof over their heads. She takes care of her family. Her brother, sister and her mother. Her mom went over the edge when her dad died and it's been a struggle. Mike is our main man. He's a half breed wolf to Mel's full white wolf. He came back to town with his brother after a lot of bad things went down with his family as well. He knew Mel was his mate and had to claim her. But he also wanted to help the town that he grew up in. Their romance is freaking steamy and hot and oh so beautiful.
I loved the side characters. Both mothers, sissy and gray, drake, brinda and Yvonne, and Virgil and princer. There's a whole slew of characters that are all part of the fun and the author did a wonderful job making them part of the fun!
I liked the writing style but I really really liked the magic and plot! The very cool lore of Native American magic the whole book follows is fascinating! And I've never read anything like that before! With action a lot of mystery and suspense and some seriously hawt romance, you can't go wrong with this one!! Ps I also loved the horses :) 5 PAWS!!
Author Interview
Welcome!!
What
a lovely introduction! Thank you
for hosting me.
First,
tell me a little about your book ….
Soul
Deep is the first book in my White Wolf series though it was actually
written third—go figure, right?
Mike
and Melanie’s tale is a contemporary paranormal suspense set in a
gossipy, small town in Northern Michigan.
Melanie
is a White Wolf spirit healer—a maggishahwi--who hears the last
call of a dying soul. She’s loved Mike Dorland forever. But her
Cinderella hopes and glass-slipper dreams of a happy ever after with
her Prince Charming are shattered the day her father kills Mike’s
while driving drunk. Now Mike hates her, and when Mike returns to
their home town, she’s both devastated and thrilled.
Mike’s
the eldest son of one of the original three founders of the quaint
town of Chabegawn, and a half-breed wolf who’s found his
mate—Melanie. Mike returns to find the town torn apart by a series
of vicious and malicious black bear slayings. Then the town’s
beloved, world-famous horse breeder vanishes and his ravaged remains
are found.
Melanie’s
bent on saving black bear mothers and cubs, and she will risk her
life to bait and capture the killers. But Mike will gamble everything
to protect his mate.
What inspired you to write your first book and what was
it?
Man,
do I remember exactly how I started writing.
My
husband and I had to fly to Wales unexpectedly, we were late for the
flight, and I grabbed the first paperback I found in the airport’s
bookshop. It turned out to be a historical romance set in—Wales (go
figure), Christina Dodd’s Once a Knight.
I
read all night long and when my husband woke up the next morning, he
remarked, “You’re actually still reading that crap.”
To
which I responded, “It’s terrific. Funny, romantic, and
suspenseful. You know what? I think I could write something like
this.”
“Lobster
bet you can’t.” Hubby dared me.
No
one tells me I
can’t do something. So, it took me six months, and I had no clue
what I was doing, but I wrote Murphy’s Laws of Time Travel – That
Pearly Drop, a paranormal time-travel romance.
We
stayed at Clearwell Castle in Wales and no setting could’ve been
more romantic and inspiring. While travelling throughout the country,
I read a few books about the myths and gods of Wales, and we took
loads of long walks down winding and climbing tree-lined roads. On
the day we were to leave, I woke up with the whole tale in my head.
Here’s
a pic of Clearwell Castle:
Now,
18 books later, I’m addicted to writing. It’s cathartic for me.
BTW,
in my day job I implement financial systems. I’ve always been a
numbers kind of person.
Oh, and in another amazing coincidence, Christina Dodd
was the guest speaker at my local RWA’s conference three years
later. I told her my story over a glass of wine. She was tickled
pink.
Are
experiences based on someone you know, or events in your own life?
Both.
I set Soul Deep in a fictional town, Chabegawn,
which I based on the many small towns we drove through while
vacationing in Michigan. Here are some pics:
Mike’s
character was influenced by one of my neighbors who gambles
professionally. Until I met him, I never imagined anyone could make a
living that way.
How
do you choose when/which characters die in your books?
I’m
not a plotter. My books evolve chapter by chapter, so I’m never
quite certain who’s going to die or when.
Are
there any new authors that have grasped your interest?
New
to me authors recently are Renee Bennet, Gem Sivad, and Courtney
Milan.
Is
there anything you find particularly challenging in your writing?
Because
I have a day job (which I thoroughly enjoy), finding time to write
can be challenging, especially around the end of year and during
tax-time.
What
book are you reading now? Or what genre?
Because
I never read the genre I’m currently writing, I’m reading
Regencies.
Who designed the cover? And do you help with them?
Who designed the cover? And do you help with them?
The
incredibly multi-talented Georgia Woods designed all the covers for
the White Wolf series. I provided character descriptions and the mood
of the book—dark and fast-paced, but not much else.
Do
you have anything specific that you want to say to your readers?
I
love to hear from my readers—about any and everything. One of my
readers just gave me some excellent advice on forging a relationship
with my daughter-in-law to be.
Oh—I
almost forgot—Two of my books—SINNER & PRYMAL LUST— are
