My review

Hmmm, what if werewolves weren’t the humans that turn into wolves, but wolves who turn into humans. And what if they came from those Vikings and their Gods. I like it when there’s a little twist on a very loved supernatural being. This story tells you that werewolves are a little different than we thought :) It’s a paranormal romance that will keep you on your toes with the twist that what “really” happens when the wolf finally finds the mate. Really it’s a fun one!

Paige is your main character. She’s a city girl who fell in love with the country as a kid but could never go back. She’s worked extra hard to get her job at “Elle” and then her one family member she loves and relies on dies, she gets to go back to that country she loved as a kid. But some things are different now that she’s grown. She still can’t get along with her mom. She has a wolf who is tracking her. She doesn’t understand the law enforcement in the small town. Things are complicated. And it gets even more complicated when Riley Gray rescues her from dying in a car wreck. Oh boy does it turn into a fun ride.

Riley has his sweet gentle demeanor. But can that surpass his wolf dual nature. He’s desperate to keep Paige as his mate, he’ll do anything, he can’t help it. And then what happens if they do become a mated pair. And he’s got some add habits, like his non-aversion to nudity, all the time. But he’s so sweet, and he’s gorgeous! But he howls, and sometimes growls, and he never wants to wear clothes. LOL and can Paige really deal with “mating” for life. And I will say that these incidents in the book are for the more mature adult.

I will say that there’s a certain shock value that comes with some parts. I will also say that some parts are also just so innocent. So, maybe be a little prepared LOL BUT it’s still a really good story. It’s got some twists that I found so interesting. I do so love werewolves. :) 5 PAWS!

My Review

This is a fun paranornal historical romance. With debutants and magic and a great heroine who won't be pushed into submission, it's a fun adventure. Melissa originally sounded like the normal lady in that time. She was going to marry, be a good wife, make her parents proud. But then the handsome stranger Justin comes into town and everything changes. There's definitely a spark of romance between them but Justin has some issues and people around him aren't safe. And he's the bad boy that everyone wants Melissa to stay away from.

I liked both main characters and I really enjoyed that Melissa wasn't a push over. There's a good bit of mystery and suspense following the plot and that kept the pages turning. The world building was nicely done as well. And I really liked the writing style. I'm not big into historical so it's great that this one was well done and kept me captivated. And I loved that though it started a little slow for me, it built and then when Justin's secrets came to light it was fast paced! And of course the romance was fun! Passions and sparks fly with them. And the more you learn about both characters the more you like them and cheer for their HEA!

Overall, if you like a little rebellion with your historical romance and a great paranornal mystery added in, I definitely recommend this one!! I look forward to book two!! 4.5 PAWS!!

About the Author
When I was a child, I made up games and characters when my sister and I played with dolls. As I grew older, I would make up scenarios and scenes, fully intending to write them down but never finding the time. In my late teens, I discovered the world of role playing and settled into an avid ‘geeky’ life of D&D, comics, sci-fi and fantasy fiction. Years passed and I finally gave voice to the stories in my head. I write romance, fantasy, action and adventure. I love tales of steampunk and history, tales of magical powers and dark curses lurking in the shadows. Though The Black Lotus is not my first attempt at a novel, it is the first I have finished.

And some fun facts about me:

I sew.
My favourite Disney film is Atlantis.
I’ve been a film extra and stood 5 feet away from Sam Rockwell.
Babylon 5 is my fave sci-fi show.
I cried at the end of Toy Story 3.

Date of Publication: February 12, 2012

ASIN: B01AKVURTM

Number of pages: 77
Word Count: 20k

Book Description:

That Kerry’s birthday falls on the most romantic day of the year sucks. That she’s set up on a date with both an angel and a demon sucks worse. But she’s about to discover that being trapped between good and evil makes for one hell of a good time.

Mike and Cal, angel and demon, are reluctant business partners. To help them get along, Cupid sends a mediator called Kerry, but rather than working on a truce, the guys are soon locked in a different battle, this time over Kerry’s smoking curves.

Explicit sex scenes, DP, and strong language.

Excerpt:

Twenty-four hours. One big house and two hot men. No big deal.
I shrugged off Michael's jacket and stole a glimpse of his zipper region. If the rumors were true, those were no rolled up socks in there.
I sucked in air and handed him the jacket. "Thanks again."
He turned to find a coat hanger, while Cal took my arm to guide me into a hall.
We stopped at the threshold. Tall candles in holders provided the only illumination, shining light onto a thirty foot table.
That sure looked like a date to me.
Three sets of plates and silverware were already laid out at one end of the table, with bowls of steaming veg and meat in the center. Wow, the smell was fantastic. Like rich gravy and sweet carrots and home.
But then, I was starved. The only food I'd had all day were two bottles of wine, and some might argue that wine wasn't food at all.
"Guess we're overdressed, huh?" I pointed at the posh red wallpaper and high ceilings, the humongous fireplace in which a fire crackled, and the sumptuous chairs.
Cal glanced down at his black shirt, top buttons open, and his tight leather pants.
Crap. Another sock-like bulge.
"Maybe we should take our clothes off." He grinned. "There's no rule about having dessert first."
I sucked in a jagged breath, but rolled my eyes to overplay the rising dampness in my panties. "Please. You should have more control than that."
Michael stepped up and offered me his arm on my left.
I hooked in, perhaps clinging a little too tight, but he didn't complain.
In fact, he didn't seem like a complicated guy at all.
Callister was the drama queen in that pairing. I didn't have to glance over my shoulder to know his bottom lip was pushed out like a toddler's being denied its toy.
Except I wasn't his toy.
Why was it so difficult to keep a cool head? The sec I laid eyes on them, a switch inside me flicked. Some inexplicable compulsion drove me to stay by their sides.
Or more likely, good old-fashioned lust.
I may not have a type, but these two were definitely it.

My Review
Ha!!! That's all I can say! I was pleasantly surprised to see that I really liked this one!! I loved the little twist with the fact that the world knows about angels and demons and Cupid! You see, Angels and Demons have a partnership with each other, to balance out. But if they can't get along with their other partner, a mediator is out in the middle. So Cal and the demon, Mike is the Angel, and kerry is the girl who is chosen to be their mediator. Which is also a bond but with both. It's hilarious. You get all three POVs and you should hear the hilarity that comes out!!

Here's my next big surprise- the roll reversal. Do not be a stereotype- I was! I thought Michael was a typical angel, he's sweet and pretty on the outside. Cal is darkly sexy and crude on the outside. But when it came down to it, Michael was the rough and gruff and Cal was the sweet and sensitive. And they both fell for Kerry. I had to laugh out loud because Kerry totally freaked that she wanted both of them. She didn't know why or how, since she's never been that kind of girl. It was cute to see not just a romance- which was freaking hawt as hell, but sweet to see a real relationship bloom between all three with compromises. And the funny thing, don't assume demons are hot and Angels are cold... That's a little hint spoiler :) I thought that was cool too. And I loved the twist of Cal's demon side, when he tells his story. Wow! So with that said, it's short but seriously sexy and has a great plot too!! I totally enjoyed this, which is surprising since I normally don't like a lot of erotica and I actually want to read more of this series!! I look forward to seeing more about this world!! :) 4.5 PAWS!

Author Interview

First, tell me a little about your book J….

The Mediator started out as an erotic short story, but I find it hard to write without a plot, so it turned into a paranormal ménage story with fleshed-out characters (as fleshed out as 22k words allow them to be—that’s the downside of novellas).

The Cupid Dating Agency series covers all aspects of relationships. In this case, it was love between three people. My next one, Movie Love, deals with a love between two people that is tender, yet passionate.

What inspired you to write your first book and what was it?

My first book is a long-lost role model for bad writing. I’m not even sure I have it on a computer anywhere. It was a very adult story about two kids discovering the worst about their parents, and devising a strategy that would restore their parents’ reputation. I liked the concept, but not only was the execution below par, the plot had more holes than you can find in my sock drawer.

Are there any new authors that have grasped your interest?

Celia Breslin writes hot novellas, although she’s been around for a while. I read all sorts of paranormal, and especially enjoy Carmen Fox and Kim Harrison.

Who do you look up to as a writer?

Carmen Fox, Celia Breslin, Julie LaVoie, Brenda Novak and many, many more.

If you had to do it all over again, would you change anything in your book?

Given the chance, I would turn The Mediator into a book, but I always feel that way when I enjoy spending time with my characters. Reading a novella is a great way to spend a couple of hours, but the low word count means you have to carefully balance plot, action and character development. A full-length book gives you more options.

Is there anything you find particularly challenging in your writing?

Writing novellas means you have to be very precise. Do I develop a character more, how much backstory do I provide, how much exposure do secondary characters get? Often I need second, third and fourth opinions before I decide where I need to add or cut a scene.

Who designed the cover? And do you help with them?

My publisher designed the cover. My books are fun and sexy, but covers in the erotic/romance genre often only focus on the sexy. Admittedly, my cover looks pretty demure compared to most books in its genre, but I like it.

Did you learn anything from writing your books and what was it?

Yes. You can’t please everyone. I don’t write for myself, but I write for readers like me, people who have a good level of literacy and are interested in exploring all forms of human interaction. Zzzzzzz. Sorry, did I make you fall asleep there? But seriously. I’ve tried to change the way I write in the past to make beta readers and agents happy, but my style is part of my voice, and second guessing myself only leads to writer’s block.

If you could be one of your characters, who would you chose?

Cal is my favorite, because he’s so broken, but I’d rather be Kerry. I love her humor and wish I could have her snark and confidence when dealing with real people.

Are there any books you think some of us should read, just because?

Yes. I recommend reading outside your normal genre. Some books will surprise you. Crime, historical, fantasy, literary—they all have their gems. An author’s writing style is often the deciding factor when I choose a book.

Do you have anything specific that you want to say to your readers?

Picking new-to-you writers is like a blind date at a new restaurant. You spend your evening off at a place with an unknown atmosphere, eating food you don’t know you’re going to like, with people you don’t know. Worse, they make you pay for it upfront. So, thank you for giving me a chance. Also, if that blind date scenario scares you, you might want to give the Cupid Dating Agency a go yourself.

EXCERPT FROM WARRIOR’S HEART BY LAURIE LONDON

Vince stuffed the last bite of stale bread into his mouth and rose from where he’d been sitting cross-legged on the railroad tracks.

Palmer leered at him from his perch in the back of the truck bed, a fitting throne for such an ass. “Where are you going, Crawford?”

“To water the flowers.” Vince gathered up the length of chain and stepped over Sean’s legs.

“I’ll be watching you,” the overseer growled. He curled his upper lip and spat out a long brown stream of tobacco juice between the gap in his teeth.

“Enjoy the view then.”

Chain in tow, he ambled down the tracks toward a large cedar tree at the edge of the woods. The doctor had been pumping him full of drugs, so he’d been drinking a lot of water to flush them from his system. The doc wasn’t kidding when he said that crap gave you a new kind of high.

When he was finished and started walking back, something on the tracks caught his eye. Several small flowers were lying on top of the steel rails that hadn’t been there a minute ago.

Okay, who was messing with him? Keetch?

He glanced down, but there the poor bastard was, sitting on the stack of railroad ties, right where Vince had left him.

How strange. He must’ve walked right past the flowers without noticing them. Had some kids been playing here earlier and left them there? Although they were out in the middle of nowhere, he supposed it was technically possible.

A gust of wind stirred the flowers, and a few petals blew away. No, he decided. They hadn’t been there for long.

He bent and picked them up. Small white daisies with orange centers, the kind that grew like weeds on the side of the road, with their stems braided together.

A lump caught in his throat. Zara used to make daisy chains for him. Bracelets, rings, crowns. He’d spent hours sketching her as she braided the wildflowers she’d gathered.

He could almost hear her calling his name with the wind.

He shook his head to clear the memory. Because of the drawings, the doctor had asked all sorts of questions about Zara, so it made sense that he was hallucinating about her now. “Stupid fucking drugs.”

“Vince,” the wind whispered again. “It’s me. Zara.”

All the air left his lungs in one big rush, and he nearly fell to his knees.

Impossible.

He needed to get ahold of himself. It had to be a trick by the doctor to make him think he was talking to his long lost love. Get him to spill all his secrets, tell where the portal was located. Well, he wasn’t going to fall for it. He spun on his heel to leave.

“Vince, wait. It’s really me. I can cloak myself, remember?” Something cool touched his cheek, sending a jolt of awareness through his body.

He grabbed at the air and his fingers actually brushed against what felt like soft flesh. He tried to make out some sort of ripple in the air around him, but there was nothing.

She laughed softly. “Figures. I haven’t seen you in ten years and the first thing you do is grab my boob.”

“Zara?” he rasped, her name coming out in a scratchy whisper.

“Yes, it’s me.”

His heart hammered in his chest as he scanned the empty space in front of him. “What the fuck? How did you—?” He wanted to pull her into his arms and push her away at the same time. If the doctor found out that the girl from the drawings was here, the girl he’d been protecting…

A cold sweat broke out on his forehead. “Do you have any clue what they’ll do to you if you’re caught?”

“They’d have to see me first, and that’s not going to happen.”

Before he could say anything else, the sound of vicious barking filled the air. The dog was still tied to Palmer’s truck, but he was looking in this direction, the hair on its back raised like a mohawk. The wind had shifted direction. The dog had picked up Zara’s scent.

Vince tensed, looked around in front of him, but he still couldn’t see anything. Zara was completely invisible. “You need to get the hell out of here.”

“Crawford,” Palmer yelled from the truck, jerking at the dog’s leash. The animal stopped barking. “What the hell are you doing?”

Vince cursed under his breath. “What’s it look like I’m doing?” he retorted. “Knitting a blanket?”

Zara chuckled softly.

“Then stop dicking around. We’ve got work to do.” The dog started barking again and Palmer kicked it.

“Tell him you’re sick,” she whispered.

“Zara, you really need to—”

“Just tell him.”

“I’m sick,” he called.

“Huh?” Palmer replied, his hand cupped to his ear.

“The doctor pumped me full of drugs. I’m…I’m sick.” To sell the lie, he hunched over and held his stomach. Vince lowered his voice. “Zara, please. You must leave.”

“But—”

“Get the hell out of here. Your safety means more to me than anything.”

He heard a sniffle.

“I’m not leaving you,” she said.

“What?”

“I’m going to help you escape.”
