Trial by Fire (Going Down in Flames #3)
by Chris Cannon
Release Date: April 4th 2016

Summary from Goodreads:

Bryn’s hopes for a peaceful new semester at school go up in smoke when someone tries to kill her—again. She’s not sure which is scarier, facing the radicals who want to sacrifice her for their cause, or her impending nightmare-of-a-Directorate-arranged marriage to her nemesis, Jaxon.

The one bright spot in her life is Valmont, her smoking-hot knight who is assigned to watch over her twenty-four hours a day. Is what she feels for him real, or just a side effect of the dragon-knight bond? At this point, stopping the impending civil war might be easier than figuring out her

My review

I have so many things to say. First, I swear I read the first two books about 5 times while waiting for this one. I've read the first book probably 10 times now. And you would think I would expect all the things the author could throw at me but NO! I was still surprised, and humbled, and I have new loves and new hates, and I'm still filled with awe. I don't know how this series is going to play out, but I will gladly purchase every book and reread them all! I've become increasingly adoring to the characters and the stories! I will never cease to be amazed at how well this author has put these fictional people in my heart and I refuse to think about an ending- I will cry and maybe throw a fit or two. But now enough about me- let me tell you about what's happening in Bryn's world!

So, of course there's more people out to kill her. It seems someone is always after her. She is learning more and more of the councils' secrets, she's becoming closer with her grandma, she has a wonderful knight that I believe they might be more than just that, and a possible future arranged marriage husband, and some fantastic friends that are standing by her side. So, first, when everyone realizes just how much danger Bryn is in, they assign valmont as her personal guard. Which is great. Until someone puts it in her mind that their feelings might not be real. Then they start to doubt a lot. But meanwhile, Jaxon might over come the horror of marrying Bryn, he loves Rhianna, and yet, he's still willing to help Bryn fight. I am growing to love Jaxon more and more as Bryn opens his eyes to things he always overlooked. Now I don't think I'd go so far as team Bryn-&-Jaxon, I'm still team Valmont, but with these changes comes the realization that there's more to Jaxon than meets the eyes. And Rhianna is becoming a favorite, as Clint and Ivy will firmly stay in my BFF pile.

But now, we start to see even more inner workings of the council and how far they are willing to go to get what they want. And no, not everyone is happy about this. And there's new dragons that will enter the scene that will make you think- hard- about a lot of things. Oh, and we get cool new powers and magics added too. It was fun to see this. The suspense at the end, I must say, poor Bryn has horrible school dance experiences. Lol! But wow- I'm still a little shocked!

As for the writing. Come on- it's a little bit of perfection! How else would so many of us all be salivating at getting our hands on this book!! :) Everything is done right-- excellent character growth, new sub plots added while still keeping to the over all integrity of the original lines, beautiful additions of new characters, a continual suspense of the build and climax, as well as adding to the lives of the original characters. And lastly, words placed together in a magical way that sucks you in and won't let you go. Seriously, I refused to put this book down- let's say I've over come some difficulties with learning how to hold my kindle and do strange things!! But lastly, I feel completely justified reading this one while still needing more for the next book! It wraps up just enough to leave you satisfied with that hanging element that makes you beg for more! So now with that said, I've decided this author has placed dragons at the top of my list! If you can't get into how cool this series is, we can't be friends ;) SUPERB!! I am never patient in wait for the next book but thank goodness the author indulges my crazy! Lol 5 PHENOMENONAL DRAGON PAWS!!!

Character interview!!!
Questions for Jaxon & Val!

1.WELCOME Jaxon and Valmont!! I am so thrilled to have you guys here! I've been a huge fan of both of you since the beginning, just for different reasons! First, tell me a little bit about yourself and your life…
Jaxon: “My father is speaker for the Directorate.”
Valmont: “You would start with that.”
Jaxon turns laser-piercing glare on Valmont.  “It’s not bragging if it’s true. Besides in our world there is a hierarchy for a reason. Not that you’d understand that since your highest aspiration is to work at your family’s Italian reseraunt.”
Valmont: Draws his broadsword. “Allow me to demonstrate my dicing and slicing technique.”
The air around Jaxon shimmers, as he shifts into a Blue dragon. “Give it your best shot.”
Bryn pops into the room. “What’s going on in here?”
Valmont: Nothing
Jaxon: Nothing
Bryn: Okay, I’ll be right out side if you need me. *exits room
2. What’s your favorite part about being “different”? One of you is a dragon shifter and the other is a knight to a dragon, so give me the juicy stuff lol
Valmont: My favorite part of being Bryn’s knight, being magically bonded to her is the connection that I feel when we’re together. When we fly, it’s like we’re one person.”
Jaxon: Flying is the best part of being a dragon.
3.Speaking of the different, you both are significant in Bryn's life, tell me how you feel about that.
Jaxon:“How do I feel about Bryn being in my life? Irritated, annoyed, sometimes nauseous depending on the company she happens to be keeping at the time…
Valmont: “I’m honored to be part of Bryn’s life. It’s my sacred duty to destroy anyone who wishes her harm.
4.Jaxon, how do you think it will play out with you possibly having to marry Bryn?
Jaxon: Do you remember that nauseous feeling I mentioned earlier?
5.And Valmont, how are you going to take it if that happens? No worries, I got your back on this vote!
If that should come to pass, it won’t be a real marriage, more like a business partnership and while I won’t like it, it won’t end my relationship with Bryn.
6.Jaxon- are you excited to have a baby sibling? I'm thrilled for your mom- whom I love by the way!! Tell her I'd love to have lunch too!
Jaxon: I’m happy that my mother is happy.
Valmont: What’s that saying…an heir and a spare…I wonder which one you’ll be.
Jaxon:  I’m the oldest so I am the heir.
(*Valmont grins) For now.
7.Jaxon- tell me something you like about Bryn- and no you may not say something ridiculous like she has nice hair lol though she does!
She doesn’t back down from a fight. She’s honorable.
8. Ok, now be nice- but tell me how you two are gonna work together and like each other enough to get through all the bad things going around?
Jaxon:  We’ll work together for the good of the Institute, but I don’t see us becoming BFF’s anytime soon.
Valmont: Agreed.
A little of this and that…
            9.  We're all dying to know- boxers or briefs? (Come on y'all are both hawt!) ðŸ˜€
Valmont: Boxers, usually with stripes.
Jaxon: It’s inappropriate to discuss such things.
Winter or summer? Jaxon: Winter, it’s in my blood.
10. Favorite color? Jaxon: Do you really have to ask? Blue, of course.
Valmont: I don’t really have a favorite. Is that weird?
       Jaxon: Yes.
Thanks so much for hanging out with us, Guys! I’m a huge fan and I can’t believe this awesome adventure is happening!! I'm still going to champion Jaxon- but no worries Valmont, you're perfect for Bryn the way you are, so there's no need to champion you!! I hope we can do this again soon :)

Going Down in Flames
by Chris Cannon
Release Date: June 30th 2014
Entangled Teen

Summary from Goodreads:

Finding out on your sixteenth birthday you’re a shape-shifting dragon is tough to swallow. Being hauled off to an elite boarding school is enough to choke on.

Since Bryn is the only crossbreed at the Institute for Excellence, all eyes are on her, but it’s a particular black dragon, Zavien, who catches her attention.

Zavien is tired of the Directorate’s rules. Segregated clans, being told who to love, and close-minded leaders make freedom of choice almost impossible. The new girl with the striped hair is a breath of fresh air, and with Bryn’s help, they may be able to change the rules.

At the Institute, old grudges, new crushes, and death threats are all part of a normal day for Bryn. She’ll need to learn to control her dragon powers if she wants to make it through her first year at school. But even focusing on staying alive is difficult when you’re falling for someone you can’t have.

Book Two:
Bridges Burned (Going Down in Flames #2)
by Chris Cannon
Release Date: January 19th 2015
Entangled Teen

Summary from Goodreads:

Since discovering she is a shape-shifting, fire-breathing dragon on her sixteenth birthday (surprise!), Bryn McKenna’s world has been thrown into chaos. Being a “crossbreed”—part Red dragon and part Blue—means Bryn will never fit in. Not with dragon society. Not with the archaic and controlling Directorate. And definitely not when she has striped hair and a not-so-popular affection for rule-breaking…

But sneaking around with her secret boyfriend, Zavien, gets a whole lot harder when he’s betrothed to someone else. Someone who isn't a mixed breed and totally forbidden. And for an added complication, it turns out Bryn’s former archnemesis Jaxon Westgate isn’t quite the evil asshat she thought. Now she’s caught between her desire to fit in and a need to set things on fire. Literally.

Because if Bryn can’t adapt to the status quo…well, then maybe it’s time for her to change it.

My Review

I loved this series opener! The prologue introduces us to Con, the gargoyle who has the curse. But the chapters give us Haylee and Nate, who have their own curse to deal with, relating to his, while finding themselves and love together.

Haylee can't love, every man anyone the women in her family love die! So she keeps to herself. She's sweet and smart and runs a very cool B&B. But when Nate crashes into life, she finds something she never could have before. Belief, acceptance, and love worth fighting for. Nate is smart as well as charming and he's the perfect match for Haylee. I loved them together.

The writing is fantastic! While it's not a huge novel, it's not super short either. And I love that the author is going to tie in multiple people to this curse all dating back forever. The magical aspects and the ghosts and the witchiness was so much fun to discover! Overall, I loved this one and I'm so glad I signed up to read it! I can't wait for the next installment!! I'm totally intrigued with what can happen next :) 5 PAWS!!

Review Blast- Vengeance Be Mine by Louisa Lo!

Vengeance Be Mine (Cosmic Balance #1)

BOOK DETAILS:

Vengeance Be Mine by Louisa Lo
(Cosmic Balance #1)
Publication date: April 30th 2015
Genres: New Adult, Urban Fantasy

Synopsis:

Megan is a typical university student trying to figure out her place in the world, except instead of hoping to pass the bar or get into med school, she’s studying to become a licensed vengeance demon.

Nineteen-year-old Megan Aequitas is the only vengeance demon and trickster hybrid ever born. In a world where vengeance demons are respectable, rule-obsessed guardians of the Cosmic Balance, and tricksters are playful, happy-go-lucky perpetrators of chaos, being half and half is, well, tricky.

Determined to prove herself worthy of her vengeance blood, Megan enrolls in University of Demonic Studies’ prestigious co-op program. Wreaking karmic revenge on wrongdoers from cheaters to crooks sounds fun and simple, if it weren’t for the unsuspecting human roommate, Megan’s flamboyant trickster half-brothers, a changeling-raised fellow outcast, and a trio of evil wannabes. Then one assignment turns deadly when Megan discovers a plot to unleash an ancient force so authoritarian, most creatures would be deemed too unworthy to exist.

After a lifetime of being embarrassed by her trickster tendencies and striving to fit in vengeance society, Megan now has to learn to embrace both of her worlds if she wants to save them.

“Louisa Lo has an exciting new voice to bring to urban fantasy and a fun and breezy writing style that kept the pages quickly turning well into the night! I need more!”- National bestselling author, Michelle Rowan

My Review

What a fascinating story!! I loved this book, and I liked it so much more when I found out this is a debut from the author. It was so fun. So, I keep thinking about when I was 19, I was in college working like a fool and studying like crazy. This chick however, she is busting her butt to become more than just a name. She's a half breed and everyone gives her hell for it. And she just wants to do a good job and help keep the balance in the world. You see, she's half vengeance demon and half trickster. They are literal polar opposites of each other. So she has some serious work cut out for her, especially when everyone wants her to fail, and will do whatever they can to make that happen.

I totally loved Megan, not just because we share the same name, even if it's spelled different. She is half vengeance demon on her dad's side and half trickster on her mom's side. The vengeance demon side helps literally give vengeance to those humans who need some justice served to them. Now the trickster side, it's hilarious. It's all about chaos and fun and mischief. But when everyone thinks she's crazy or stupid to go to school to become a full licensed vengeance demon. She wants order and justice. And she wants to be more than a dirty half breed. She has a great immediate family but a really crappy extended family. She's got some interesting friends, and a new roommate who cracks me up. And a lot of enemies and bullies and just all around meanies.

The whole idea is to get Megan into employment of demon vengeance. Well, her first trial run assignment almost kills her. He's a stupid old human and yet he has power no one should. AND no one wants to help and she doesn't want to ask just anyone, she really wants to do things the right way. Plus she knows if she asks for help someone from the bad guys will find out. And yes, there's the great lessons of karma and how to treat others. But there's some great mystery and a wonderful fun adventure.

I loved the side characters. Her sister Esme, her roommate Rosemary, her crazy hilarious brothers, they are over the top, and her parents. As well as the friend she makes who was bullied even more than her. I loved them all. The mean girl, the bad guy, and the professor who had me rooting at the end. :) The characters are second best, to the world building. Seriously, the who concept of Megan and her genetics and character are awesome, and so are everyone else in this story. I am so glad this is a series. I absolutely cannot wait for more! 5 PAWS!

Drew

I was no quitter.

I refused to quit Trent.

So angry. I was so goddamned angry.

He was pushing me away when all I wanted to do was pull him close. It was almost laughable he tried to break up with me. I felt the laughter bubbling up inside me, ready to explode. It was like I was so incredibly infuriated I couldn’t yell, I couldn’t cry, I couldn’t even speak.

But I wanted to laugh. The kind of laugh only villains in movies did. The kind that bespoke of internal madness.

That’s what tonight was. Madness.

He was jumped. Beaten.
He told me he loved me.
Then he laid out intent to withhold that love.

Trent was trying to protect me, in his mind he wasn’t keeping the love he felt from me, rather showing it in the best way he knew how. I respected that. I did.

But I wouldn’t have it.

We’d gotten one week together, I wanted more.

I suppose thinking we could keep our relationship a secret was naive. Merely wishful thinking. When you loved someone the way we loved each other it was impossible to hide.
It showed in every way.

Not just in the way we looked at each other. Or the way we spent every spare moment together. It showed in ways I never wanted to see until now. Ways I thought no one else would notice.

I’d been fooling myself.

It was the way he put ketchup on his plate so I could eat his fries. The way I automatically pulled the tomatoes off my burgers and slid them on to his plate. It was the fact I went to him first whenever something happened I wanted to share. And the way we made each other’s coffee, exactly as we drank it.

Love is in the details. It is in the every day. It is the way you treat someone when they aren’t even looking and the way they fill your head when you’re apart.

Of course people were going to see it.
Joey saw it almost from day one. Braeden and Ivy already knew. The reporter from GearShark knew from just one conversation…

Hiding our relationship was almost not an option.

Dissolving it wasn’t either.

My hand throbbed and my knuckles were slick with blood when I slammed out of the room. I was so intensely frustrated I couldn’t look at him another minute.

We weren’t over. No way in hell.

But I needed a minute.

My mind was so clouded with anger I didn’t see him. I didn’t notice him at all until he cleared his throat. My body jerked to a stop and my head whipped around to see Romeo leaning against the wall, like he was resolved to be there a while.

I’m sure he heard everything.

Me and Trent had been yelling. And the sound of my hand going through the wall hadn’t exactly been silent.

“Guess I don’t need to ask how he is.” Romeo said, straightening off the wall.

“You agree with him?” I challenged, my hand flexed. It was already fucked up from going through a wall, but I’d use it again if I had to.

“I understand why he thinks he’s doing what’s right.”

At first his words didn’t sink in. They just pissed me off even more. All I heard was Romeo understood Trent. I growled low and stepped forward in an aggressive movement.

Romeo’s every narrowed, watching me close but other than that his body language didn’t change.

That’s when I realized he was no threat to me. That’s when I realized he was on my side.

“We’re in a relationship.” I said, point blank. I kind of wanted to shock him. I wanted someone other than me to feel the sting of words tonight.

I also wanted a fight.

Just not with Trent.

Never with Trent.

“I know.”

The amusement in his tone took a little heat out of my oven.

“You can’t keep secrets like that from family. Family who really loves you.”

I tilted my head to the side and regarded him. Was he saying he knew before he walked into this house a little bit ago?

Was he saying he didn’t care?

“You should probably get that hand cleaned up. You’re bleeding on the floor.”

I glanced down at the blood dripping off my knuckles.

“I’ll talk to Trent.” He went on.
Romeo stepped off the wall and toward the bedroom door. I moved fast, silently snatching his arm and turning him around. He didn’t pull away or act like my roughness was a threat, but his muscles tensed beneath my arm and I felt tension coil in his limbs.

“He cares what you think.” I said low. “Your opinion matters. So if you aren’t sure how you feel about our relationship or the fact there are two gay guys in your family walk away, walk away right now.”

Romeo stared at me level, his blue eyes bouncing between mine.

“He’s already fucked up enough right now. If you can’t offer him the brother he needs tonight I won’t let you in that room.”

Romeo smiled. His lips curved up into a knowing, almost pleased expression. “He pissed you off so bad you put your hand through a wall and he’s pushing you away, but yet here you are, standing guard at the door protecting him.”

“That wasn’t an answer,” I growled.

Romeo laughed beneath his breath. And then he answered.

Not with words.

In seconds his arm was out of my grasp and he was hugging me. I hesitated, shocked that he would just reach out and hug me like this.

“Family takes care of family.” his voice was low. “I’m not sure if there is anything that could make me turn my back on family, but if there is, it isn’t this.”

When he pulled back I looked him in the eye.

He meant it.

“Congratulations on finding a love worth fighting for.”
