Changelings & Champions by Lola White!

Image and video hosting by TinyPic

Book Description:

Magic is necessary to all things, but too much of it is sending the emotions of the Dark Fae Court to extremes.
The Fae Nation’s championship boxing match is the highlight of the year, but there’s a chaos-creating surge of energy accompanying every exhibition bout leading up to the main event. With the championship looming, the Special Collections Team is called to Las Vegas to investigate the magical disturbances at the Red Raven casino, the home of the volatile Dark Fae Court. But the fae are not the only ones affected by the instability. The Dark Court is a hostile environment for the SCT, dragging them closer to emotional breakdowns and lines drawn in thesand. Dangerous royals, randy revelers and relationship dramas have the Special Collections Team close to folding, until a pair of changelings ups the ante.
Excerpt:

“Can we get on with it?” Greel broke in. “I need to be on my way, and I’d be just as happy leaving now, if you lot can’t focus.”

“By all means.” Beryl’s voice dripped sugar. “If you’re scared of being torn apart by the Dark Court, your entrails served for dinner at the downstairs buffet, then do begin the briefing. I’m surprised they haven’t banged down the door for you yet, as it is.”

“I do not fear the fae,” Greel sneered.

Beryl smiled with all of her teeth showing. “You should.”

“Enough!” I raised my hands, unable to take another moment. It seemed we had learned nothing on our first case. “Just tell us what the mission is. The sooner we begin our investigations, the sooner we can get out  of Las Vegas, and away from the fae.”

Beryl patted her hair. “I see you have the sense to fear the fae, Niccolo.” I gritted my teeth to hold back my angry words, which would serve no purpose other than getting the former assassin bent out of shape. However, it was on the tip of my tongue to tell her, in no uncertain terms, that one belligerent fairy in my company was more than enough, and I did not need to surround myself with a whole Court more.

As I said, there was no reason to voice such a thing out loud, especially not to an overly emotional woman thoroughly skilled in all the ways a single finger can kill a man. And  especially not when said finger sported a triangular hunk of metal large enough to rip a man’s throat open. Instead, I asked Greel to continue.

“There have been anomalies in the flow of magic through this casino.” He passed his glare around the table, staring at each of us in turn. “The disturbances have grown stronger lately,  and with the exhibition matches already underway, we’ve been able to find a  correlation between the power fluctuations and the bouts.”

“But that’s not surprising.” Zahra shifted in her seat, though she kept her cheek pressed to the tabletop. Her voice scraped against my eardrums like sandpaper, and she moaned in pain whenGiovanni rubbed her shoulder. “More and more people would be coming to the casino to see the championship match, right?”

Greel lifted his lip. “You are correct.”

“It’s the highlight of the year for my Nation,” Beryl told her.

“With so many fae already here,” Zahra managed to lift her head a bare inch to look at me, “and so many tourists popping in, and then all the others gathering to see the fight, it makes sense that the magic would be stronger.”

I cocked my head. “She’s right.”

“Not exactly,” Beryl protested. “Morrigan keeps the citizens of other Nations strictly prohibited to the lobby and the boxing arena, but apparently the spikes in magic are affecting the gaming floors and nightclubs, as well.” Our angel liaison waved his hand. “The disturbances havegrown beyond what’s normal for these events. The magic seems to be human.”

Santeria and Sorcery by Lola White

Book Description:
Magic is necessary to all things, but like any other source of power, it can be abused. The king of gods has created a Special Collections Team to deal with illegal magic users, those who break the law set forth by the Council of Five. Being part of the team is not an honor however, but a punishment for the crimes the teammates have committed themselves.
Zahra is a magic-addicted djinn charged with the capital crime of consorting with humans. Niccolo is a vampire who betrayed his goddess. Beryl is a fairy assassin demoted for her transgressions against a queen. Wade is the only human on the team, and though his inclusion is supposed to be a compliment, it’s clear there’s a larger plan in play.
From tragic romance to zealous belief, the Special Collections Team is in over their heads, but still must find a way to be successful in their investigations, pay their penance and learn to work as a team.
In Santeria & Sorcery, their first case finds them in Miami, where trouble has come to the attention of the Council of Five. A sorcerer is stealing magic to set himself up as a god, but the team is new and each are unused to working well with others. Their personal issues also hinder their investigation—dealing with bloodthirsty boyfriends, jealous fairy kings and a dangerous fallen angel on top of their own emotional deficiencies take a toll.
The Tithe Collector is an erotic series and does include graphic scenes: M/M, M/F and multiple partners.
Excerpt:

“I think this team has been assembled as more than punishment. I know Niccolo is well placed in vampire society, for all he believes he is not. From what he’s said, I think Zahra also has some importance she is not telling. Beryl has served her goddess for a thousand years, and people say simply speaking the assassin’s name is enough to make Lucifer’s Fallen cower in fear.”

“So what?”

The bouda shook his head. “And you are Blessed. I think the team is being used for a bigger purpose than what we’ve been led to believe.”

“Sure, Chimbwe, that’s possible.” But that’s all I was prepared to say on the matter, at that moment with his words of war mocking my memories. I was half-believing, and half-resistant to the idea. On one hand, it was excellent strategy to take the wind from the enemies’ sails, on the other, it was hard to imagine God being so manipulative.

“I don’t know what is going on yet,” Chimbwe whispered. “But the team needs to learn to trust each other. I am afraid of what may happen in the future, and I do not want Niccolo caught in something that may lead to his death.”

I waved my mug because it seemed a better option than putting it down to cross my arms over my chest. “So you and I need to be all buddy-buddy to get the job done. Is that it?”

Chimbwe grimaced. “Even if my suspicions are not correct, this team must meet the expectations of the Council in order to be released from their punishments. I want Niccolo to be free, so you four will need to work as one.”

I weighed his words carefully. I was used to being a part of a team that shared the same training, values and goals. This team, though, was all over the map. They only spoke to each other when they had to, came from different Nations, definitely had different training because I couldn’t imagine Zahra or Niccolo handling a weapon like Beryl, and they all reported in to different leaders.

Hell of a team. Four of us were moving in four different directions, and it seemed Chimbwe wanted to be our wise guide, leading us all into a cohesive whole. A wise guide might be just what we all needed.

That realization had me sitting back down at the table. “I would like this team to work together,” I told him. “Considering the monsters we might run up against, our lives might depend on it.”

My Review
This is such an interesting story. And you're going to ask, if I liked it so much why is my rating not so high. I'm gunna talk about the really good things first. Like the different types of supernaturals. Very fascinating how they were created. The plot of the story, very well done. The the flow of the story is fast paced as well. And if you like erotica it's right up your ally. Now to the disappointing parts. The characters have their good parts, like who they are. But there is no back story. I felt like I was jumping into a series, like book three, and severely lacking many many things. Because of this, I had no connection to any of the characters no matter how much I wanted to love them. I wanted some explanations and some details. And the actual depth of the characters could mean much more if that would happen. There's very little bits and pieces thrown in but not enough for me to grasp. If the author writes a prequel of just back stories with some explain actions, I will totally re read and rewrite this lol because the book and writing is actually quite good. The blessed human, the gay passive vampire, the assassinating fae, the addicted djinn, the scary shifter who's the only smart one, the ridiculous brother of the vampire, and the crazy Angels. See... You want this to be an awesome book and it really could be!! And though they start out hating each other they become the team they were meant to be. Oh and the crazy magic stealing thing they are investigating lol See good stuff. So with that said, I'm hoping that in book two of the series we continue to see more good stuff :) I'm looking forward to it :) 3.5 PAWS!
